Why do birds migrate?

Birds migrate because they need somewhere to breed. At first sight, this statement might seem rather strange. Surely they migrate to avoid adverse conditions during the part of the year when they aren't breeding? To understand why it makes sense, we first have to understand why birds choose to breed in certain places and not in others.
 
Birds of all species need a few essential resources:
Somewhere to build a nest:
   
 
 
Enough food to raise their young:
 
 
Opportunity to raise their offspring to independence:
