Why are some kinds of birds more migratory than others?

Birds are more likely to migrate if they live in highly seasonal environments, such as in the arctic or in parts of the tropics with pronounced wet and dry seasons. However, in most parts of the world, migrant and resident species are to be found living alongside each other, which raises the question of why birds experiencing the same level of seasonality respond in such different ways.
Typical migrants include:

Swallows

Warblers

Typical non-migrants include:

Sparrows

Woodpeckers

Swifts

Shrikes

Crows

Grouse

Flycatchers

and Hummingbirds

Titmice/Chickadees

and Pigeons
